Katsuya - Sushi

With Father’s Day just around the corner, everyone is gearing up for a day filled with brunch, bourbon, and a good, old-fashioned barbecue. But before we get there, there’s one other holiday Miami’s “foodies” are preparing their stomachs for: International Sushi Day. This Saturday, June 18, get your fill of fish from some of Miami’s best sushi spots–including our favorites below.

NaiYaRa

Everyone who’s anyone has tasted Chef Bee’s delectable Asian cuisine. This Saturday, head to his haute Sunset Harbor haunt, NaiYaRa {1854 Bay Road, Miami Beach; 786.275.6005}, for exotic sushi rolls inspired by the chef’s Thai background and his worldwide travels. Of course, since you’re in the Magic City, we recommend you try the “Miami Heat Roll”–it’s a combination of hamachi, jalapeño, kimchee, sour cream, black caviar, and yuzu soy.

Katsuya

Sitting in the stylish SLS Hotel on South Beach, there’s nothing like a sexy sushi dinner at Katsuya {1701 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.455.2995}. Led by Master Sushi Chef Katsuya Uechi, this namesake spot puts an American spin on traditional Japanese sushi and robata dishes. If you’re there on Saturday, try his signature “Special Katsuya Roll.” A unique fusion of tuna, yellowtail, salmon, scallop, crab, and avocado, this delicious roll comes wrapped in rice, soy paper, and cucumber, and served with a side of wasabi ponzu.

SOHO Bay

Drive over MacArthur Causeway from mainland Miami, and as you reach the beach, look to your left to find SOHO Bay {520 West Ave, Miami Beach; 786.618.2788}. The brainchild of Executive Chef Ricardo Sauri, who has worked everywhere from Nobu and Touch and Bloom, to NYC’s famous Lotus, this modern Japanese restaurant serves up innovative sushi and sashimi in a sexy, waterfront setting. Head there this Saturday and ask for one of its most inventive rolls–the Vegan Serori–which combines grilled zucchini, chives, shiitake mushrooms, cucumber, kampyo, bell pepper, and shiso, and tops it all with fried hearts of palm.

Kona Grill

If you live near Doral, there’s no place you’d rather be this Saturday than Dolphin Mall’s hottest new restaurant addition, Kona Grill {11401 Northwest 12th Street, Doral; 305.515.2633}. With its award-winning sushi program of lunch and dinner favorites–including tried-and-true favorites like the California Roll and Spicy Tuna Roll, and more exotic options, like the Picasso Roll with spicy yellowtail and yuzu ponzu–Kona Grill is the place to ring in International Sushi Day right.

Nestled in chic Palm Court, this light and airy café is open for breakfast, lunch, and an early dinner. The real treat, though, are its doughnuts—it comes up with new gourmet flavors each and every day, including top favorites like: chocolate Oreo with a white chocolate drizzle; honey glaze, almond and crunch balls; cookies and cream; lemon and coconut; and today’s special, vanilla glaze with brown butter streusel.
The Salty Donut: Of course, you can’t celebrate National Donut Day without Miami’s hottest (and first!) artisanal doughnut shop, The Salty Donut {29 NW 24th Street, Wynwood; 305.925.8126}. In honor of the day, this tasty locale is throwing a celebration like no other—complete with National Donut Day t-shirts from LYFE Brand, doughnut and drink pairings from The Salty Donut, food and drinks from Miami Smokers and J. Wakefield Brewery, a pop-up of The Anderson Bar, and the cherry on top: a never-before-seen National Donut Day doughnut from The Salty Donut, for event-goers only. Taking place from 7 p.m. to 10 p.m. TONIGHT, right next door to J. Wakefield Brewery,

Chef Thomas Buckley

For decades, Nobu has been one of the hottest, and one of the most esteemed, restaurants around. Started in 1994 at the request of actor Robert De Niro–a huge fan of Chef Nobu Matsuhisa, whose request has since turned into 32 Nobu restaurants around the world; in Malibu, Lana’I, Hong Kong, Monte Carlo, Dubai, the Eden Roc Miami Beach, and more.

And alongside this famous chef is none other than his right-hand man for more than 17 years: Executive Chef of Nobu U.S., Thomas Buckley. Born and raised in English seaside villages, Chef Buckley developed a natural passion for seafood during his childhood. In 1991, he received classical French training from Chef Michel Bordin at the distinguished Connaught Hotel in London; and after that, he joined internationally-known Chef Jean-Georges Vongerichten at his second Vong restaurant in London. From there, Chef Thomas Buckley worked with Chef Daniel Boulud and assisted François Payard when he opened his famous Payard Pâtisserie and Bistro, before meeting Chef Nobu Matsuhisa in London in 1998. He worked at Nobu London for four years before moving to Miami Beach, where he opened the city’s Nobu outpost. Now, as Executive Chef of Nobu U.S., he travels to 32 Nobu locations around the world to oversee their operation and menu.

Known across the globe for his masterful technique, innovative recipes, and unparalleled culinary works of art, Chef Thomas Buckley’s reputation stands on its own. In 2008, he co-authored a book with Chef Nobu Matsuhisa entitled “Nobu Miami: The Party Cookbook”–a celebration of the fusion cuisine originally served at the restaurant’s Miami outpost. He’s helped with many Nobu openings; including restaurants in Milan, Dallas, Bahamas, Los Angeles, and Kuala Lumpur, as well as Nobu Hotels like Nobu Hotel Caesars Palace, Nobu Hotel City of Dreams in Manila, and the soon-to-be opened Nobu Hotel Eden Roc in Miami.

Now at Nobu Miami {4525 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.695.3232}, a new Sunday brunch puts Chef Buckley’s innovative approach to cooking on full display. Reimagining classic brunch dishes as Nobu-style creations, he has come up with a menu that’s a feast for both the eyes and mouth. For the first act, diners can choose from Nobu’s Sushi and Sashimi Bar, munching on options like Tuna Tataki, Heirloom Tomato Ceviche, Oysters with Nobu Salsas, and a stunning selection of Nobu-style salads.

For the main course, Nobu pushes its brunch boundaries with inventive dishes like Miami Smokers Bacon and Egg Toban, Scrambled Egg Donburi with Salmon (Chef Nobu’s favorite dish!), or plates from Nobu’s Yamucha Carts–like Miso Waffle and Panko Chicken with Brown Butter Maple Tosazu, and Egg ‘Bao’ with Crab and Shiso Béarnaise. For a real treat, pair it all with unlimited Krug Grand Cuvée Champagne and a selection from Nobu’s decadent dessert bar. Because at Nobu, there’s just no other way to do brunch.

Soon-to-be an entire Nobu Hotel Eden Roc, and the flagship hotel of Nobu Hospitality, Nobu Miami boasts one of the best menus in Miami Beach–and the world. Head there for Sunday brunch and try an enticing menu like only Buckley could create. It’s sure to give you a taste of exactly why a man of Chef Nobu’s caliber has entrusted Chef Buckley with Nobu kitchens around the world.
