Cherry Blossom Sour at The Setai, Miami Beach


October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month, and in all corners of Miami, restaurants are finding ways to raise money for a cure. From glowing-pink buildings and flamingo-colored cocktails, to beneficial prix-fixe menus created by some of the best chefs in the Magic City, here’s how you can eat and drink for a cause in “the 305” this October:
Drink for a Cause at The Setai!
For the rest of this month, raise awareness and support for breast cancer with something you already love doing: drinking. From now through October 31, head to The Lobby Bar and The Courtyard at The Setai, Miami Beach {2001 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.520.6000} and order a Cherry Blossom Sour cocktail. It costs $18, is made with a delicate mix of Toki Japanese Rare Whisky, Cherry Heering, cherry vanilla syrup, fresh citrus juice, and egg whites, and is garnished with filthy cherries. If that’s not enough to draw you in, $5 from every Cherry Blossom Sour bought through the end of this month will benefit the Breast Cancer Research Foundation.
Turn Dinner into a Staycation
Head to Dolce Italian {1690 Collins Ave, Miami Beach; 786.975.2550} at the Gale South Beach for dinner, order the Heirloom Tomato Salad and Linguine alle Vongole from its Miami Spice menu, and stay until morning. From now through the end of October, Gale South Beach will offer a 25% discount on best-rate hotel rooms, and a portion of every room booked will benefit the Susan G. Komen foundation.
Bleau Goes Pink
For the ninth year in a row, Fontainebleau Miami Beach {4441 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 877.326.7412} has partnered with Sylvester Comprehensive Cancer Center at the University of Miami Health System to raise money for breast cancer research. As it does every year, on the first of the month, this iconic hotel illuminated its Chateau building in pink with 100+ high-powered light fixtures—a sight that can now be seen nightly, from 10 p.m. to sunrise, through October 31!
Along with that, two of the hotel’s famed restaurants, StripSteak by Michael Mina and Scarpetta by Scott Conant, are offering special $55 three-course menus, a portion of the proceeds from which will benefit breast cancer research. At each restaurant, guests will get one glass of rosé with their choice of an appetizer, entrée, and a dessert from the prix-fixe menu. Go to Scarpetta for Yellowtail Crudo or Braised Short Ribs of Beef and farro risotto appetizers, followed by mains like Duck & Foie Gras Ravioli, Ricotta Raviolini, Local Snapper with fennel & shellfish brodetto, or Honey Glazed Duck with caramelized endive. Want something heavier? Head to StripSteak by Michael Mina for appetizers like Jumbo Gulf Shrimp Cocktail or Prime Steak Tartare, and then move on to your choice of Black Truffle Risotto with a 63º egg, Gallus Braun Chicken with mushroom dashi, or Moyer Farms Angus 8-ounce Filet Mignon for dinner. Of course, no meal is complete without dessert, so let the chef surprise you with something seasonal, sweet, and downright delicious.

Taking place at The Hyatt Regency in Downtown Miami, Iron Fork 2017 is sure to be a night that brings together food, fun, and Miami’s finest. Here are just a few things to look forward to at tomorrow night’s event:

A Battle of Chefs
The popular Iron Fork Chef Competition is one of the most coveted parts of this annual event. This year, Brian Nasajon, Chef/Owner of Beaker & Gray and Santiago Gomez, Executive Chef of Tacology {701 South Miami Avenue, Brickell; 786.347.5368} and Corporate Chef of Cantina La Veinte {495 Brickell Avenue, Brickell; 786.623.6135}, will take the stage in a duel of fire, knives, and a little trash-talking for the coveted Iron Fork “Skillet of Excellence.” This event will start at 6 p.m.
A Way to Give Back
At Iron Fork, you can eat for a cause. This year, the event has partnered with Miami Rescue Mission, a charitable organization that feeds and houses more than 1,300 homeless men, women, and children in Miami-Dade and Broward counties. To help give back to this honorable cause, Iron Fork will host a silent auction and give 100% of the proceeds to Miami Rescue Mission.
And of course, some of the best restaurants in town…

From the open-air food stalls of Paris’ Marché Mouffetard and San Pedro Market in Cusco, Peru, all the way to the sprawling outposts of Eataly scattered throughout the United States, food halls have long been a trend for food aficionados far and wide. And with the rise of food markets in South Florida—especially yesterday’s announcement of the Miami chefs who will be part of the first-ever Time Out Market in the U.S., which will open on Lincoln Road in 2018—we can now officially say Miami has hopped on for the ride.
First opening in Lisbon in 2014, Time Out Market Lisbon was the world’s first food and cultural market based entirely on editorial curation. At its sister location here in Miami Beach, the concept behind it will be the same. This market space will bring together some of the most popular cultural experiences and chefs in the Magic City, each with their own restaurants, under one roof; and all at an affordable price. Located at 1601 Drexel Avenue, the new Time Out Market Miami will feature a curated mix of 17 kitchens, three bars, an art space, and even a demonstration kitchen. Different from most Miami Beach restaurants, the average dinner will cost just $20 per person, and the dinner you’re eating will be complemented by some of the city’s most celebrated chefs and restaurateurs, award-winning mixologists, and to keep the ambiance lively, works by rising local artists.
While the market itself won’t open until 2018, just yesterday, the team behind Time Out Market convened in the Magic City to announce the long-awaited list of chefs who have signed on for the ride. Drumroll please… here they are:

Jose Mendin: This home-grown superstar is known for his Pubbelly Sushi concepts in Miami and the Dominican Republic. At Time Out Market, expect his characteristic out-of-the-box Latin fusion concepts with a slightly Asian flair.
Michael Pirolo: Known for the soulful Italian cuisine he whips up at Alton Road’s Macchialina, Michael Pirolo will bring his famed ‘Grandma style’ pizza pies to a standalone stall on Lincoln Road.
Matt Kuscher: A third generation restaurateur and creator of five unique concepts in Miami, including his award-winning KUSH, Matt Kushner is all the rage. While the new concept is still in the works, one thing is for sure—hungry diners can expect more of his edgy American comfort food.  
Scott Linquist: Look who’s coming to Lincoln Road! The Mexican guru behind Coyo Taco and OLLA, a fine-dining Mexican spot that used to be open on Lincoln Road, will bring his hugely popular tacos (all made with locally sourced vegetables, seafood, and humanely-raised meats) to Time Out Market Miami.
Matthew Sherman: Everyone in Miami knows about Jugofresh, and the man behind that and Paradigm Kitchen is coming up with a new concept. Here, expect his typical bold flavors, mindful, mostly-plant-based eating, and of course, deliciously-healthy cuisine.
Maria Orantes: Executive Pastry Chef Maria Orantes has long been known for her Pubbelly acclaim, but with her new BUHT-ER concept (pronounced “butter”), she will officially have a restaurant of her own. Maria loves to experiment with new techniques and flavors, something you will easily spot when you try her sweet menu of delicious and innovative desserts.

While most of us here in Miami fared well after Hurricane Irma, many of our neighboring cities, islands, farmers, and purveyors in South Florida are still trying to recover. To make sure they do, one of our very own Magic City chefs, Executive Chef Santiago Gómez of Cantina La Veinte {495 Brickell Avenue, Brickell; 786.623.6135} and Tacology {701 South Miami Avenue, Brickell; 786.347.5368}, has organized a charitable event to do what he can to help. This evening of food and fun will bring together six chefs from Miami and Latin America, all of whom host a collaborative chef dinner appropriately named Recipes for Change.
Taking place at Casa Florida, which is located at 437 SW 2 Street, this collaborative dinner will highlight each chef’s national background and cooking techniques, and help bring awareness about the hurricane destruction that has affected South Florida farms. To keep the menu articipating chefs include: Santiago Gómez (from Miami and Mexico), Carlos García (from Miami and Venezuela), Renzo Garibaldi (from Peru), Sebastián La Rocca (from Argentina and Costa Rica), Mirciny Moliviatis (from Guatemala), and Xavier Torres (from Miami).

Whiskey is an American pastime, and now, Miami’s most opulent Asian hotel experience is adding the rare whisky of its homeland to the mix. With the introduction of its new Asian Spirits Program, The Setai, Miami Beach {2001 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.520.6000} has invested in exclusive Japanese spirits (some aged as long as 21 years!) with 20+ unique Asian whiskies and vodkas at The Bar and The Courtyard, alone. As part of the program, The Setai, Miami Beach will have Japanese whisky-based drinks, cocktails, and a special whisky flight on its new menu.The latter is the star of the show; it’s priced at only $33 and includes two rare single malts, Yoichi and Miyagikyo, and a rare blended whiskey, Taketsuru Pure Malt. The whiskies are incredibly hard to obtain, and even harder to price affordably, which makes this bar program truly special.
With its warm shades, Asian decor, and upscale accents, The Bar at The Setai makes patrons feel like they’ve been transported to the haute hangouts of China or Japan. Add that to the fact that the whiskies are served through traditional Japanese methods, where the alcohol is taken straight from the fine-grained wood barrel where it was aged, and you’ll start to believe you’re actually there. Adding to its allure, this dazzling Collins Avenue hotel is actually home to one of the largest Japanese whisky collections in South Florida, and with vintages like Hibiki 17 and 21 years, Yamazaki 12 and 18 years, and Nikki Pure Malt 17 and 21 years, it’s not hard to imagine.
Heading to The Setai, Miami Beach? Belly up to the bar or grab a lounge seat in the idyllic courtyard and experience the Asian Spirits Program for yourself. A picture of true Asian elegance, this is one drinking experience you’ll be happy is in South Florida… and not Asia.

While db Bistro Moderne {255 Biscayne Boulevard Way, Downtown Miami; 305.421.8800}, in Brickell’s JW Marriott Marquis, has been a staple here in Miami, the celebrity chef and food guru behind its name is ready for a change. Much like he did with db Bistro Moderne, Daniel Boulud is opening another location of one of his NY dining institutions in its place: Boulud Sud.
Perfect for Brickell Avenue’s buzzing business crowd, Boulud Sud will serve as both an intimate lounge and a stylish dining destination. Grab a seat underneath soft lighting, and while you eat, take in your surroundings: creamy, linen seating and modern Moroccan-inspired tile floors are juxtaposed against a backdrop of lattice wall accents, brass hardware fixtures, natural wood, and for a touch of “Miami Beach,” live plants.
And speaking of the food, Daniel Boulud is tapping his Executive Chef from db Bistro Moderne Miami, Clark Bowen, to helm the kitchen. Together, the pair will collaborate to come up with a menu that combines existing Boulud Sud favorites with new dishes that highlight local South Florida ingredients—and all with the original restaurant’s characteristic Mediterranean flair. From the NY location, expect plates like Octopus à la Plancha, Arabic Lamb Flatbread, Taramasalata, Sicilian Grilled Swordfish and Moroccan Chicken Tagine; and for dessert, whatever db Bistro Pastry Chef Saeko Nemoto, who will also be part of the venture, whips up. At Boulud Sud, Nemoto will create a menu of both original desserts and twists on the NY location’s classics: like the much-beloved Grapefruit Givré, a delicate fusion of sesame halva, rose loukoum, and grapefruit sorbet.
With this exciting new addition to the Miami food scene, however, comes the sad ending of another chapter. From its beautiful surroundings and upscale service, to its popular “Oyster Happy Hours,” executive lunches, wine pairing dinners, and delicious daily menu, db Bistro Moderne has long been a haute French favorite in the Magic City. This Saturday, September 30, will be its final dinner service here in Miami, so reserve a table now and say “au revoir” in anticipation of the equally-mesmerizing Boulud Sud.

People all over the United States, especially those here in sunny South Florida, have witnessed the horrific destruction that came from Hurricane Irma and Maria. And in response, we’ve seen the beauty of America rise up from the chaos. as countless relief organizations (both longstanding charities and grassroots efforts) have joined the movement to ensure victims get the help they need. Now, you can add South Florida chefs to that list of heroes.
On Wednesday, October 11, 15+ chefs will host a collaborative culinary benefit at The National Hotel to raise funds for recovery and rebuilding efforts in South Florida and Puerto Rico. Made possible by a partnership between The National Hotel and Neighbors4Neighbors—a national nonprofit created after Hurricane Andrew to bring relief efforts to different parts of the United States, the Caribbean, and the Bahamas—this night of food and fun is appropriately named “Chefs 4 Neighbors.”
Of course, with a dream like this, the chefs are who bring it to life. Donating their time, talent, and passion, the participating chefs include: Chef Matthew McDonald (National Hotel), Chef Dewey LoSasso (The Forge), Chef Michael Shultz (Sea Level at Harbor Beach Marriott), Chef Martin Liz (Lost Kitchen Supper Club), Bobby and Michelle Mongelli (HogFish Bar and Grill), Chef Chris Lee (Barcelona Wine Bars), Chef Adrienne Grenier (3030 Ocean), Chef Paul Menta (The Stoned Crab & Thee Hands Fish), Chef Cindy Hutson (Ortanique & Zest), and Chef Gordon Maybury (Turnberry Isle). Alex Bulnes, Erick Jones, Rene Lopez, Felix Munoz, and Javier Peuser will act as supporting chefs, and Chef Paul Menta, who owns Key West Rum Distillery, will generously donate the rum served in the event’s private seating area, “Eite Neighbor.”
In the spirit of Key West, Chefs 4 Neighbors will be a night filled with live music, indulgent cuisine, and free-flowing drinks. Proceeds will go towards rebuilding the Florida Keys and Puerto Rico, both of which were hit hard during the recent hurricanes.
The party will run from 8 to 10 p.m. on Wednesday, October 11, in the hotel lobby bar, Blues Bar. The National Hotel is located at 1677 Collins Avenue. Tickets to this event run between $75 and $200, and can be purchased here.

‘Tis the season in Miami—event season, that is. Head to Doral on Saturday and Sunday, November 4 and November 5, respectively, and you’ll get to experience one designed with South Florida’s foodies in mind. That’s right! The second-annual Doral Food and Wine Festival is coming back, and it’s coming back bigger and better than ever.
Co-produced by Events Marketing Network USA and Brew N Motion, this festival will put some of South Florida’s most popular chefs and restaurants under the spotlight. Through a grand tasting pavilion, wine and spirits pavilion, culinary and mixology demonstrations, cooking competitions, live music, interactive retail displays, and a kids zone, food-lovers will be able to taste bites from places like Wynwood Kitchen & Bar, BRIO Tuscan Grille, Kona Grill, Olivos, Mangia L’Italia, BLT Prime, and much, much more.
