You don’t want to miss out on these Miami gems

Mediterranean olives

Miami is no stranger to Mediterranean food. From crowd-pleasing Greek restaurants to serviceable falafel joints and Middle Eastern markets, there’s always been a way to get your za’atar fix. But what we’re finally seeing is ambitious chefs and restaurateurs nimbly adapting the ancient cuisine of the Middle East to that of the Mediterranean—dubbed “Middleterranean” by the food press—to cater to our city’s increasingly global palate. Meaning: Greek, Turkish, Persian, Lebanese, Israeli, Egyptian, Moroccan, and everything in between. What makes all of this so exciting is that Miami diners can finally experience the splendor of this culinary heritage in upscale restaurants where the setting, and not just the food, are as regal as a sultan’s crashpad (and if you’re lucky the cocktails are great, too).

From the folksy to the fancy, we’ve explored the best Mediterranean spots in the city and are tipping you off to some of their best dishes.

Byblos {1545 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.604.5700}

The swankiest of the bunch, this stylish spot peddles “Middleterranean”  cooking via Toronto where its polished sibling restaurants have already garnered a loyal following and critical nods. For this outpost—their first in the U.S.—Owner Charles  Khabouth was excited about the fact that they could install a wood-burning oven in the space. “It was a tremendous expense, but now we can make authentic ‘pide’ bread. And you really need the right char and the right crust, which only this type of oven can provide,” explained the Lebanon-born  Khabouth. The Turkish bread gets topped with maitake mushrooms, spinach and Dukkah seasoning, and black truffles and haloumi cheese for an indulgent Levantine mash-up.

Executive Chef Ben Heaton is British but one would hardly know it given the kitchen’s confidence with dishes of tangy-sweet housemade labneh, barbari bread dusted with za’atar, and crispy eggplant with tahini aïoli. The cocktails also play with Middle Eastern flavors with drinks like the Gulab with rose-infused vodka and pomegranate syrup and the Arak Frappe made with the anise-flavored liquor and orange blossom water and honey.

Must try: The “sweet jeweled rice,” a traditional Persian wedding dish is an undeniable draw. Fragrant with saffron and festooned with pistachios, marcona almonds, shredded carrots, pomegranates, and barberries, it radiates color and texture and is emblematic of the elaborate and labor-intensive dishes common to Persian cooking. But the main allure is the fluffy rice’s sheer, unadulterated deliciousness. The kitchen makes each pot to order, and it easily feeds four as a side dish to the kitchen’s Turkish manti dumplings filled with smoked eggplant and the Cornish hen stewed in a herbaceous “sabzi” sauce.

Cleo South Beach {1776 Collins Avenue, South Beach; 305.534.2536}

This contemporary Mediterranean haunt on the ground floor of the Redbury hotel is a hit with the South Beach visitors and locals alike. Moroccan-born Executive Chef Danny Elmaleh has created a Pan-Arab journey with focus on the food of North Africa comprising a dizzying amount of small plates. And while his menu covers plenty of bases, it never strays far from its roots dishes, like harissa carrots, lamb shwarma, Moroccan fried chicken, and eggplant Moussaka.

Must try: The spicy Moroccan “cigars.” Finger food of the Maghreb, these delights are composed of spiced ground beef rolled up in phyllo sheets and fried. Cleo serves them in a bowl of thick labneh yogurt sauce, which tempers the heat from cumin, allspice, and cayenne in the meat.

Etzel Itzik Deli {18757 West Dixie Highway, Miami; 305.937.1546}

Say you’re craving a real shakshuka experience, complete with a side of pillowy pita bread and pitchers of mint-lemonade; then you should head to this no-frills North Miami joint where owner Itzik  Younis has been presiding over a menu of Israeli classics for almost 20 years. With the clatter of complimentary small salads (pickles, beets , carrots, chickpeas, coleslaw, and corn) that hit the table the minute you sit down, the experience is the closest you’ll get to Tel Aviv in Dade County.

Must try: The “hummus foul” is the closest dish you’ll get that mimics the fast-casual lunch of Israel’s hummus-only restaurants (also called “hummusiyas”). The large platter of chickpea dip is doused with stewed fava beans and topped with a healthy serving of tahini and a hard boiled egg along side with their thick pita bread.

It’s next week: June 24 through June 30

Negroni Cupcake and the 100 Year Negroni from Market at EDITION

Drink up! It’s time to pay tribute to one of the world’s greatest cocktails: the Negroni, a sweet and bitter drink from Italy made with gin, vermouth, and Campari. From Monday, June 24, through Sunday, June 30, 10,00 venues from San Francisco to Sydney will whip up Negronis for a good cause during the sixth-annual Negroni Week 2019—which, this year, couples the 100th anniversary of the cocktail itself.

In honor of the occasion, the team behind Negroni Week has partnered with 30+ charities, and every participating venue picks one from the list to support. There are over 30 bars and restaurants in Miami participating this year. Read below to find out where we’ll be celebrating and why!

Novikov Miami

Order a Negroni at Novikov Miami {300 South Biscayne Boulevard, Downtown Miami; 305.489.1000}, and you’ll help raise money for the Arbor Day Foundation, the largest nonprofit membership organization dedicated to planting trees.

Matador Bar

Next week, head to Matador Bar {2901 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 786.257.4600} and get a bougie twist on the classic Negroni for $18, excluding tax and gratuity. This version is made with Wild Turkey Rare Breed, Campari, Cocchi Vermouth di Torino, and Grand Marnier Centenaire slow cooked with citrus peels. It is served on a 24k gold-flaked ice cube and finished with essence of Bergamot. A portion of the proceeds will benefit Matador Bar’s charity partner, the Surfrider Foundation.

Tanuki Miami

Located in the heart of South Beach, Tanuki Miami {1080 Alton Road, Miami Beach; 305.615.1055} is a trendy sushi and Pan-Asian hotspot just off Alton Road. Next week, it will offer two variations of the classic Negroni: the Golden Fields with Hiro Junmai Sake, Campari, and Antica Formula, and the Beekeeper with Barr Hill Cat Reserva, Campari, and Gonzalez Bypass. Both drinks are priced at $15 and will benefit No Kid Hungry.

Mr. C Coconut Grove

A new hotel brought to Coconut Grove by the Cipriani family, Mr. C Coconut Grove {2988 McFarlane Road, Coconut Grove; 305.800.6672} is already joining in the citywide celebrations. During Negroni Week, head to the hotel’s lobby outdoor garden, Il Giardino, between 5 p.m. and 8 p.m. and get the classic cocktail for buy one, get one free. Guests can get the 100 Year Negroni—an ode to centennials living in the Italian village of Acciaroli, where the local rosemary is believed to be a factor in their good health—made with artichoke-infused Plymouth Gin, rosemary, orange-infused Campari, Lillet Blanc, and Antica Carpano. This twist on the classic is priced at $17, excluding tax and gratuity. For $5, excluding tax and gratuity, get the booze-filled Negroni Cupcake with rose-tinted icing, a rosemary sprig, and an orange peel garnish. A portion of the proceeds from both items will benefit No Kid Hungry.

Generator Miami

In honor of Negroni Week, The Jim and Neesie, a new restaurant inside Generator Miami {3120 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 786.496.5730}, will serve two special drinks: the Negroni Supreme (raspberry-infused gin, red pepper-infused Campari, Cocchi Vermouth di Torino, and pistachio extract) and the White Negroni (Pisco Torontel, Friulano vermouth, Cocchi Americano, and Peychaud’s and orange bitters). Head outside to Driftway bar, and you’ll find a Frozen Negroni with apricot-infused gin and lemongrass-infused select Cardamaro. All three drinks will be priced at $12 and benefit the Wild Foundation.

Dolce Italian

You better believe an Italian staple like Dolce Italian {1690 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 786.975.2550} knows how to make a good Negroni. The secret to the restaurant’s most popular salad

Caesar Salad Dressing from The Rusty Pelican

makes eight cups

Ingredients

1/4 c Worcestershire sauce
1/4 c balsamic vinegar
4 large garlic cloves
2 anchovy fillets
1 c lime juice, freshly squeezed or bottled
1 c Parmigiano Reggiano, grated
5 c canola oil
2 large eggs
Kosher salt, to taste
Fresh black pepper, to taste

Method

Fit a blender or food processor with a blade attachment. On high speed, blend the Worcestershire sauce, balsamic vinegar, garlic, anchovies, lime juice, and Parmigiano Reggiano until smooth. Reduce to low speed and add eggs until combined. In a steady stream, slowly add the canola oil while gradually increasing the speed of the blender—allowing the dressing to emulsify.

To serve: Season the dressing with salt and pepper, to taste. Keep refrigerated in an airtight container for up to five days.

The Rusty Pelican is located at 3201 Rickenbacker Causeway.

And these are just our favorites
