Katsuya - Sushi

With Father’s Day just around the corner, everyone is gearing up for a day filled with brunch, bourbon, and a good, old-fashioned barbecue. But before we get there, there’s one other holiday Miami’s “foodies” are preparing their stomachs for: International Sushi Day. This Saturday, June 18, get your fill of fish from some of Miami’s best sushi spots–including our favorites below.

NaiYaRa

Everyone who’s anyone has tasted Chef Bee’s delectable Asian cuisine. This Saturday, head to his haute Sunset Harbor haunt, NaiYaRa {1854 Bay Road, Miami Beach; 786.275.6005}, for exotic sushi rolls inspired by the chef’s Thai background and his worldwide travels. Of course, since you’re in the Magic City, we recommend you try the “Miami Heat Roll”–it’s a combination of hamachi, jalapeño, kimchee, sour cream, black caviar, and yuzu soy.

Katsuya

Sitting in the stylish SLS Hotel on South Beach, there’s nothing like a sexy sushi dinner at Katsuya {1701 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.455.2995}. Led by Master Sushi Chef Katsuya Uechi, this namesake spot puts an American spin on traditional Japanese sushi and robata dishes. If you’re there on Saturday, try his signature “Special Katsuya Roll.” A unique fusion of tuna, yellowtail, salmon, scallop, crab, and avocado, this delicious roll comes wrapped in rice, soy paper, and cucumber, and served with a side of wasabi ponzu.

SOHO Bay

Drive over MacArthur Causeway from mainland Miami, and as you reach the beach, look to your left to find SOHO Bay {520 West Ave, Miami Beach; 786.618.2788}. The brainchild of Executive Chef Ricardo Sauri, who has worked everywhere from Nobu and Touch and Bloom, to NYC’s famous Lotus, this modern Japanese restaurant serves up innovative sushi and sashimi in a sexy, waterfront setting. Head there this Saturday and ask for one of its most inventive rolls–the Vegan Serori–which combines grilled zucchini, chives, shiitake mushrooms, cucumber, kampyo, bell pepper, and shiso, and tops it all with fried hearts of palm.

Kona Grill

If you live near Doral, there’s no place you’d rather be this Saturday than Dolphin Mall’s hottest new restaurant addition, Kona Grill {11401 Northwest 12th Street, Doral; 305.515.2633}. With its award-winning sushi program of lunch and dinner favorites–including tried-and-true favorites like the California Roll and Spicy Tuna Roll, and more exotic options, like the Picasso Roll with spicy yellowtail and yuzu ponzu–Kona Grill is the place to ring in International Sushi Day right.

Just when you think that South Beach had exhausted its list of trendy nightlife destinations, a new place pops up that makes all its predecessors seem, well, a bit bland. 9beach Miami {1626 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 786.327.6073} has managed to do just that—emerging as one of the hottest places in town.

But don’t think that 9beach Miami is just another of-the-moment SoBe hot spot that could be uprooted at the blink of an eye. Owner Itay Sacish assured us that he and his partners are in this for the long haul. “We’ve only been open a month and we’re already packed several nights out of the week,” he says. And come November, just in time for the busy season, they expect to be at the top of every visitor’s must-do list.

9beach miami

Inspired by the original 9beach that opened in Tel Aviv in 2001, 9beach Miami is a mixture of Eastern and Western influences paired with a laid-back Mediterranean atmosphere. Dramatic flashes of purple, pink, and orange lights set the mood for this outrageous indoor-outdoor space, coupled with ornate hand-carved gold accents, brazen lion heads, and rock band lyrics splashed all around. And although the 5,000-square-foot patio sits along Collins Avenue, high booths, large white tents, and lush greenery make you feel more like you’re in a secluded garden than on a busy street.

The vibrant atmosphere, however, does not distract from the caliber of the restaurant’s cuisine. In keeping with the Mediterranean vibe, there’s plenty of hummus and couscous to go around. But the overall menu is as diverse as its surroundings. There’s even an entire menu dedicated to sushi. We recommend the Dragon Roll—shrimp tempura, asparagus, and scallion with avocado and kabayaki sauce on top.

Not expecting our plates to be large, we also order the Crispy Shrimp and Dumplings (pictured above) as an appetizer, which could be a meal in and of itself! For our main courses, we ordered the Filet Mignon and the Moroccan Chicken (pictured below). Both exquisitely presented and perfectly flavored.

We dined on a Tuesday night, which meant that as we were finishing our meal, the space was gearing up for “Pour Some Sugar On Me” Tuesdays. An exotic belly dancer appeared at the entrance, a DJ took over the music, and flocks of beautiful people started making their way into the space.

9Beach promises to not only be a nighttime spot, but a daytime destination as well—it’s open daily from 9am-noon for breakfast and from noon-4pm for lunch. There’s also a late-night menu served from midnight-2am. Come dressed to the nines or in your beach cover-up. At 9beach Miami, anything goes.

Soho Bay

Earlier this month, DiningOut had the opportunity to eat at one of South Beach’s newest Japanese restaurants—SOHO Bay {520 West Avenue, Miami Beach; 786.618.2788}

Hidden on a quiet bayfront perch just north of the MacArthur Causeway, this unassuming new restaurant has much to offer relative to its humble surroundings. The restaurant, which held its official grand opening party on April 2, is poised to be one of Miami’s go-to sushi spots, perfect for all occasions, whether it’s a romantic night out, a celebratory group dinner, or a laid-back happy hour spot for after-work drinks. In addition to its dining room and sushi bar (pictured above), SOHO Bay features an intimate covered patio looking out on the Miami skyline and Star Island as well as an outdoor lounge area out front.

Soho Bay Drink

Although new to the Miami scene, SOHO Bay is no stranger to the restaurant biz. In fact, the SOHO Bay brand has been in business for over 15 years in Brazil, boasting eight locations throughout the country. The Miami location (the first outside of Brazil) is helmed by Executive Chef Ricky Sauri, who brings more than 20 years of experience (including stints at Nobu, Touch, Bloom, and Khong River House) to the SOHO Bay team.

Upon being seating on the patio, which features wicker chairs and wooden tables, we were immediately greeted by our friendly server, who presented us with both a food menu and a tempting cocktail list featuring a number of exotic drinks that we were told will rotate with the seasons. The Japanese-inspired menu is designed to share—perfect for those of us who want to taste as many items on the menu as humanly possible.

Soho Bay Sunset

Our appetizers came out just as the sun was setting, creating a gorgeous orange-pink display over the horizon. We dug in to the Shrimp and Vegetable Tempura and the delicious Chicken and Asparagus Skewers from the robata bar. The skewers were some of our favorites, though we wished there were more of them! (An order includes three skewers with just three pieces of chicken on each.)

Soho Bay Sushi

Next came our sushi rolls: the succulent Spicy Tuna Roll, which was served with pickled cucumber and rolled with thin tamago and marinade ikura; and the Soho Ebiten Roll (a personal favorite), an interesting concoction of glazed shrimp tempura and goat cheese rolls with protruding slices of salmon. And for our main dish, we shared the Wagyu Picanha, a juicy beef dish that comes in thinly sliced pieces topped with wild mushroom chimichurri, roasted hearts of palm, and leeks.

Soho Bay Sushi Roll

Though sufficiently satisfied, we couldn’t resist trying the Key Lime Pie for dessert, which was actually served as more of a mousse next to a pile of crumbly graham cracker crust. While covering all the bases expected for your typical high-end sushi lounge, the exceptional atmosphere and amazing vistas combined with the excellent quality of the food, place this property ahead of the pack and at the top of Miami’s must-try list.

Located just across from the Townhouse and Setai hotels, Bâoli {1906 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.674.8822} has managed to keep a relatively low profile. But that doesn’t mean that this SoBe hot spot doesn’t draw a crowd. In fact, it’s quite the opposite. Beautiful locals and the jet-set flock to this chic hot spot night after night for its lounge ambience, live DJs, and club-like atmosphere (after all, the The Bâoli Group is best known for its trendy restaurants and lounges in Cannes, France).

While Bâoli is oft pegged as a late-night destination, many may not realize is that it is also an elegant Mediterranean and Asian-inspired restaurant with a tranquil foliage-filled outdoor patio that’s perfect for any occasion, whether it’s a romantic date, a business dinner, or a girls’ night out. We were lucky enough to score a table here recently and couldn’t have been more impressed by the sheer volume of menu options, the beautiful presentation, and the impeccable service.

Greg O'SullivanBe sure to come early and have a seat at the hip outdoor bar, where head bartender and master mixologist Greg O’Sullivan will whip you up a tasty cocktail from his expertly crafted menu of signature drinks to tempt even the most discerning palate. Choose from fruity favorites such as the Summer Fresh, an amalgamation of Absolut Citron, St. Germaine, lemongrass-infused agave syrup, lemon juice, and pineapple; or the Bâoli Pear Spirit, Absolut Pears Vodka, St. Germaine, Perrier Jouet Grand Brut, club soda, and lemon juice.

Next, sink into one of the comfy booths or quiet tables and let your server guide you on an incredible journey of regions and flavors. Executive Chef Gustavo Vertone blends his Italian-Argentinian background into his own unique interpretation of modern Mediterranean and Asian cuisine. In the mood for sushi? Bâoli offers over a dozen perfectly prepared and presented sushi and sashimi rolls. Our recommendation here: the Mango Tango roll, a perfect combination of shrimp tempura, asparagus, cucumber, and spicy mayo topped with avocado, hamachi, and mango salsa.

Hamachi Sashimi TacosIn the mood for Italian? Try the Heirloom Tomato and Burrata appetizer, a gooey blob of creamy mozzarella cheese paired with fresh tomatoes. Other menu must-tries include the Hamachi Sashimi Tacos appetizer, the Charbroiled Octopus Salad, and the Truffle Mac ’n Cheese, and Bâoli Kobe Burger—worth every penny of its $50 price tag! Make sure you leave room for dessert, too, as all options are made in house and include a Warm Chocolate Fondant and Banana Rum Pudding, and Green Tea Brûlée.

Baoli Burger

And the best part is that after dinner, there’s no need to hail a cab and relocate to your next venue of the evening—this is it! The party gets going around 11pm and continues well into the wee hours of the morning.
