These in-house eateries aren’t just for tourists

In Miami, we’re no stranger to hotel restaurants, whether it’s a mega-resort catering to visitors or boutique hotels looking to woo locals for a staycation. But finding a good hotel restaurant can often be a challenge. Fortunately, a plethora of exceptional hotel restaurants have sprung up over the past decade, attracting both locals and out-of-towners looking for a beautiful meal in a beautiful setting. Here are our favorites.

Lido Restaurant & Bayside Grill at The Standard

Edge Steak and Bar {Four Seasons Hotel, 1435 Brickell Avenue, Miami; 305.381.3190}

Chef Aaron Brooks helms this modern steakhouse at the Four Seasons downtown which has proven popular among local food lovers and visitors alike. The dining room feels cozy and urbane with a large rectangular-shaped marble bar lit by dangling exposed string lights and white-washed oak tables flanked by cream leather booths.

The kitchen focuses on locally-sourced ingredients that work their way into shellfish starters, hefty slabs of beef, and creative mains like the Basil-Crusted Corvina with piquillo peppers. A gorgeous outdoor terrace offers downtown skyline views.

The Bazaar by Jose Andres {SLS Hotel, 1701 Collins Avenue, Suite 100, Miami Beach; 305.455.2999}

Prepare for sensory overload at this clubby outpost for global tapas and exotic cocktails. Like its LA counterpart, there are two dining rooms: “rojo,” a red and black accented spot in the hotel’s lobby with black leather couches and a bull’s head clad in a lucha libre mask;  and “blanca,” a quieter option adorned with a massive seashell-clad chandelier.

The epic menu contains anywhere from 60-80 items that change daily but can include Bacalao Fritters served in a clear plastic sneaker and a Scallop Risotto presented in a coconut shell.

La Mar {Mandarin Oriental Hotel, 500 Brickell Key Drive, Miami; 305.913.8358}

Peruvian Chef Gaston Acurio’s downtown Miami outpost occupies a gorgeous waterfront spot at Brickell Key’s Mandarin Oriental. The main dining room is awash in shades of watery greens, sandy grays, and beiges and wood, but it’s the enticing outdoor terrace that offers glittering views of downtown. It provides the perfect backdrop to Chef Diego Oka’s contemporary Peruvian dishes with colorful tweaks.

Lido Restaurant & Bayside Grill {The Standard Hotel, 40 Island Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.673.1717}

The Standard’s hipster-friendly pool deck is also home to one of South Beach’s best waterfront patios. Chef Mark Zeitouni’s menu emphasizes Mediterranean dishes that please vegetarians and carnivores alike.

Zuma {Epic Hotel, 270 Biscayne Boulevard Way, Downtown; 305.577.0277}

Upscale Asian dishes compliment a dock crowded with million-dollar yachts. If you’re looking to indulge, reserve a spot during their weekend brunch where the restaurant rolls out nearly the entire menu: buffets of endless fresh sushi, skewers of marinated beef and vegetables from the robata grill, and prepared salads. Then there’s a bottomless glass of Louis Roederer Champagne in addition to Bloody Marys made with robata-grilled tomatoes. And it all goes perfectly with the waterfront views of downtown.

You’re probably familiar with the enormous Brickell City Centre project that has been slowly but surely engulfing a section of Brickell between Southwest Sixth and Eighth Streets along South Miami Avenue. The $1.05 billion, 5.4 million-square-foot development has been over four years in the making—and it’s almost complete!

In anticipation of the the massive live-work-play-shop-eat complex nearing its final stages, Swire Properties Inc., the project’s developer, has partnered with The Market Company to create a weekly farmers’ market that will run every Sunday from 11am-6pm along the landscaped pathway between Seventh and Eighth Streets, directly underneath the Metromover track. The first farmers’ market will take place this Sunday, April 17.

The Brickell City Centre Farmers’ Market will feature conventional and organically grown produce as well as a variety of cheeses, breads, and prepared foods. Zak the Baker bread, local honey, orchids, fruit smoothies, Argentine empanadas, artisanal olive oil, and herb plants round out the growing list. The farmers’ market hopes to continue growing with additional vendors and cultural programming soon to be announced.

It’s a welcome addition to the Brickell neighborhood, which hasn’t had a consistent farmers’ market in years.

3-1/2 oz fluke, cubed

1 fresh lime
2 oz leche de tigre
1 oz red onions, julienned
Garnish:

Method: In a bowl, mix fish, salt, habanero, lime juice, and leche de tigre. Form the mixture into a mountain shape, and place red onion on top. Decorate with sweet potato, choclo, and micro-cilantro.

A lot of changes are happening in Brickell, where seemingly a new skyscraper or real estate project is sprouting up daily. But rest assured, there’s one local favorite that’s not being engulfed by the construction chaos: The River Seafood & Oyster Bar {650 South Miami Avenue, Brickell; 305.530.1915}.

Since 2003, The River has been welcoming Brickell residents and nearby office workers with its laid-back, no-fuss ambience, outrageous happy hour, and fresh-from-the-sea menu options. It almost seemed inevitable that the restaurant would have to close due to the construction of the massive Brickell City Centre, the same project that forced Miami’s oldest bar, Tobacco Road, to shutter in late-2014. Instead, The River used the time to give itself a facelift, expanding its bar area and adding a new oyster-shucking station featuring its already-famous daily selection of oysters from around the country.

DiningOut recently had the chance to check out the updated digs, and we couldn’t have been more impressed. The place was hopping as usual, especially around the bar area and the new communal table. And the food tasted better than ever. For our appetizers, we tried the Tuna Poke, the Grilled Octopus, and the Thai Barbecued Ribs. Everything served was fresh from the kitchen, perfectly cooked and presented with extra attention to detail.

For our main courses, we split the NY Strip Steak, served on a piping hot plate (a great option for non-seafood fans), and the extremely delicate Snapper Fillet, a highlight of the evening.

The River is already known for having a reasonably priced menu, and now, it has stepped up its game on Tuesdays with its $20 Lobster Night. Now, you can treat yourself to five lobster dish specials for only $20 each. Choose from Lobster-Foie Gras Spring Rolls; Lobster Udon Noodles with pork belly and spicy crab-lobster broth; rich Pappardelle and Lobster; the classic Lobster Bun with crème fraîche and lemon on a brioche bun; or the savory Lobster Bake in parchment paper with artichokes, cream, and corn.

And more good news! Although we encourage you to check out the restaurant’s updated interior, The River has now partnered with GrubHub to offer delivery for both lunch and dinner. When it comes to Sunday brunch, we’ve always struggled to find a place that can please everyone. Until Now.

Tamarina {600 Brickell Avenue, Brickell; 305.579.1888}, a little slice of Italy in the heart of Brickell that’s known for its authentic Italian and Mediterranean dishes, fresh ingredients, and exceptional crudo bar, recently introduced its Sunday brunch, a carefully planned buffet experience that, no matter your dining companions, is sure to satisfy.

When we say buffet, we hope you’re not picturing a cruise ship-style smorgasbord of endless gluttony. Tamarina’s buffet is more in the style of a royal banquet, featuring the best of the best breakfast and lunch offerings designed to wow your senses—and taste buds. This is sophisticated brunching, but without the fussiness.

Everything on offer has been prepared that day, with chefs on hand waiting to replenish the second supply looks low.

Start off at the eggs and waffle station, where you can choose your own fresh ingredients to have an omelette prepared the way you like or have your waffle iron-pressed on the spot, served with powdered sugar, maple syrup, and your choice of berries.

Next, make your way to the opposite end of the dining room for Italian station, featuring a salad bar with garden-fresh leafy greens and veggies, an assortment of fresh-from-the-oven breads, and a selection of artisanal charcuterie meats and cheeses.

Be sure to leave room on your plate for more of the main event: dozens of seafood delicacies like freshly shucked oysters, tuna tartare, cured salmon, and more. There’s also a carving station and standard breakfast meats like bacon and sausage. Oh, and let’s not forget the “Pasta a la Minute”: two types of homemade pasta prepared to order upon request. (The day we dined, the pastas were two types of ravioli, both equally satisfying.)

At the center of it all is the decadent dessert table, featuring mounds of pastries, from scones to muffins to croissants to brownie-type concoctions of chocolaty goodness and Italian staples such as tiramisù and panna cotta. But the highlight here was hands-down the bomboloni, traditional Italian doughnuts filled with Nutella and topped with powdered sugar.

Don’t worry if you can’t fit everything on your plate at once. You can revisit the buffet as many times as you’d like. Friendly servers are on-hand to take your drink orders and to make sure that  your water and said drinks are adequately replenished. For just $35 per person, have your choice of bottomless bubbles (whether in the form of Champagne or mimosas or Bellinis, both mixed with homemade Italian sorbet of juice—addictively refreshing).

Bloody Marys are also a specialty, as is the sangría, which is served in a 1-1/2-liter punch bowl. Cold-pressed juices and coffee drinks are also available à la carte.

Brunch can be enjoyed in the dining room or on the covered patio (our recommendation), where large tables and comfy couches make for a nice alfresco lounge space. This is also where the band, the French Horn Collective, a five-man folk/jazz ensemble, serenades guests with catchy acoustic tunes that are sung mostly in French.

Halloween is creeping up on us faster than you can say “trick or treat” five times fast. Here’s a breakdown of this weekend’s top events.

Friday, October 30

biltmore halloweenFrom 8pm-midnight, the Biltmore Hotel {1200 Anastasia Avenue, Coral Gables; 305.913.3230} hosts its annual Halloween party featuring an open bar, buffet dinner, and entertainment. Don’t miss out on the costume contest with great prizes for most creative (must be handmade), spookiest, and best couple. Members $100; nonmembers $125; RSVP required.

Starting at 8pm, Piripi {320 San Lorenzo Avenue, Coral Gables; 305.448.2423} will shut down San Lorenzo Avenue for its Noche de Duende Masquerade Bash featuring flamenco, tapas, cocktails, live music, and more. STK HalloweenFrom 7-10pm, STK Miami {2311 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.604.6988} will host a themed night featuring a two-hour open bar “Boos and Booze” package for just $50. Engage in the enchanting magic of Halloween and dress to impress, with prizes awarded to the best costumes and a special performance by Nu Deco Ensemble’s Peter White.

Saturday, October 31

From 11am-5pm, join Brasserie Azur {3252 Northeast First Avenue, Midtown; 786.800.9993} for Halloween brunch, featuring $25 unlimited mimosas for two hours. Bring the kids from for games, face-painting, balloons, cotton candy, a live magic show, and more. Then, head over to sister restaurant Villa Azur {309 23rd Street, Miami Beach; 305.763.8688} for an adults-only Halloween party featuring music by DJ Stephan M.

The event kicks off at 7pm at the Mana Production Lot {318 Northwest 23rd Street}. Throughout the night, a 240-inch jumbo screen LED TV will be playing  the best Halloween videos of all time, including a special screening of ”The Rocky Horror Picture Show” at 10pm.

Segafredo HalloweenFrom 5pm-2am, Lenox Avenue will be closed for Segafredo Espresso l’Originale’s {1040 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach; 305.673.0047} 15th annual Halloween party. Two remote bars will be set up in addition to Segafredo’s permanent inside bar, and a fantastic lineup of DJs is scheduled to play. A limited food menu will also be available.

Also on Lincoln Road, Quattro Gastronomia Italiana {1014 Lincoln Road, Miami Beach; 305.531.4833} will offer a special four-course prix-fixe dinner, where guests can delight in a selection of the restaurant’s finest dishes while admiring the costumes, trick-or-treaters, and holiday fanfare along Lincoln Road. Outdoor tables are $110 per person; inside tables $65 per person.

Hyde Beach HalloweenFrom 7pm-midnight Hyde Beach Kitchen + Cocktails {111 South Surf Road, Hallandale Beach; 954.699.0901} is getting into the Halloween spirit by offering guests FREE access to its Haunted Beach Bar, located on the first floor. Enjoy ghoulish sounds by DJ YSL while watching scary movies right on the sand. A popcorn cart, massive candy bar, and specialty drinks will also be available all night long.

Morton’s The Steakhouse {multiple locations} is offering a three-course dinner for just $35 featuring entrée selections such as 6oz Filet Mignon, Honey-Chile Glazed Salmon, and Chicken Bianco. The restaurant will also offer an extended happy hour from 5pm-close.

The Oceanaire Seafood Room {900 South Miami Avenue, Brickell; 305.372.8862} is offering a three-course dinner for two PLUS a bottle of wine for just $60. They are also serving happy hour all night in the bar.

basement halloween 2015Starting at 11pm, Basement at the Miami Beach EDITION {2901 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 786.641.7119} will host its first-annual Halloween party, “Into the Jungle,” featuring DJs Cosmo Baker, Brett Sylvia, and DJ Spiff. Tickets are $20; click here to purchase.

Seaspice {422 Northwest North River Drive, Miami; 305.440.4200} gears up to celebrate Halloween with a two-day event around the theme “Dia de los Muertos.” On Saturday, the hot spot will transform into a goulish haven on the river for its invitation-only Day of the Dead Halloween Ball, with Modern Garden serving as an offering altar filled with flowers to honor those who have passed. Guests will indulge in Champagne, specialty cocktails, and delicious bites throughout the evening.

Sunday, November 1

But the Halloween fun doesn’t stop there! On Sunday, November 1, from noon-6pm the celebration continues at Seaspice with LVMH and Veuve Cliquot for Dia de los Muertos Sunday brunch, featuring live music, photo booths, makeup artists, models, Champagne, giveaways, and more.

Chef Cindy Hutson

We always love when local chefs are recognized, and we couldn’t be happier for Chef Cindy Hutson of Ortanique on the Mile {278 Miracle Mile, Coral Gabels; 305.446.7710}, who is being honored tomorrow evening during Les Dames d’Escoffier Miami’s annual gala at the Mandarin Oriental Miami {500 Brickell Key Drive, Brickell}.

For over 16 years, Hutson has dazzled diners with her creative and inspired “cuisine of the sun,” which fuses tropical ingredients and classic culinary techniques into a flavorful and innovative modern cuisine.

Hosted by FOX Channel 7 newscaster Belkys Nerey, the event will not only honor Huston, but will also celebrate the Miami chapter’s 15th anniversary. The evening will include Champagne, canapés, an elegant three-course meal, entertainment, and auction items.

All profits go to Les Dames d’Escoffier, a service organization comprised of distinguished women leaders in food, wine, hospitality, and farming that is dedicated improving nutrition, education, and quality of life in local communities.
