Don’t know where to celebrate America’s birthday? Don’t worry. We do! This weekend, head to the restaurants below and pay homage to Uncle Sam with some fun, tasty drinks–and like all of our favorite events here at DiningOut Miami–lots of delicious food.

The Restaurant at The Raleigh/The Raleigh Hotel: On July 3 and 4, SBE’s iconic The Raleigh Hotel {1775 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.534.6300} will host an All-American Cookout with American-style grub like: grilled oysters with charred scallion and yuzu vinaigrette; Alaskan king crab legs with a lemon garlic aïoli; grilled St Louis ribs with kimchee barbecue, pickled coleslaw, and grilled sweet corn; and a Wagyu beef “Hot Dog ‘Everything’ Bun” with sauerkraut relish, beer mustard, and dirty chips. The party will continue for two full days, and will include family games like giant Jenga, giant Connect Four, ping pong, and corn hole, all with poolside ‘Americana’ tunes playing in the background. Adding to the festivities, $25 beer buckets and Red Bull + Ketel One buckets will be available, along with a live raw bar sitting right next to the grill. If that’s not freedom, we don’t know what is.

SOHO Bay Restaurant: On Sunday, July 3 from 11am-4pm, celebrate Fourth of July one day early with a brunch day party at SOHO Bay Restaurant {520 West Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.498.4644}. For just $29 per person, guests can feast on all-you-can-eat West Indian curries, Escovich fish, jerk chicken, jerk and roast pork, Ackee and saltfish, Callaoo, salt fish fritters, balmy, fried dumplings, soups, salads, and much more. Drinks aren’t included, but bottomless mimosas are available for just another $25 per person. The magical Biscayne Bay views and beats by Jazzy T? Those luxuries are free.

A Fish Called Avalon: On Monday, July 4, A Fish Called Avalon {700 Ocean Drive, South Beach; 305.532.1727} invites patrons to drink to America with a special wine deal: five glasses of select American wines for just $35. Taking place from 6-11pm, guests can pair their wine with tasty finger foods, all while watching the fireworks over the beach.

Bagatelle Miami Beach: At Bagatelle Miami Beach {220 21st Street, Miami Beach; 305.704.3900}, celebrate Independence Day like the French do–early and with a boozy brunch. To toast to the (American) red, white, and blue, enjoy French favorites like le pain perdu, a barbecue pulled pork “The Piggy” sandwich, spicy crab Benedict, Chateaubriand for two or three, a truffle-oil pizza, and more; all while being entertained by DJ Gotta.

Rusty Pelican: Want fireworks with a view? The Rusty Pelican {3201 Rickenbacker Causeway, Key Biscayne; 305.361.3818} has got it. To celebrate the day, this iconic Key Biscayne spot will have an American-style buffet with hearty entrées like brisket barbecue sliders, chicken wings, hot dogs, its signature mac ‘n’ cheese, potato salad, and more; all for $52.70.

KLIMA Restaurant and Bar: The brainchild of duo Pablo Fernández-Valdés and Yago Giner, KLIMA Restaurant and Bar {210 23rd Street, Miami Beach; 786.453.2779} gives diners near and far a taste of authentic Barcelona. Sitting in the heart of the historic district in Miami Beach, head there on the Fourth for a tasty, three-course American-inspired menu of dishes like pork ribs with a pimenton glaze, a prime beef burger, Key lime pie, and more. A vegetarian prix-fixe menu is also available, and the whole meal costs just $39 per person.

Katsuya Chef Jose Icardi

Those in-the-know understand that when it comes to fresh and innovative sushi, very few places compare to Katsuya {1701 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.455.2995}. And now, the South Beach location of the SBE group restaurant is spicing things up by adding some brand-new dishes to its already popular menu that won’t disappoint. DiningOut recently had the chance to interview Katsuya’s Executive Chef Jose Icardi to discuss the new items, his background, and how Miami reflects the menu as a whole.

1. Tell us about your background. Where are you originally from and how did you end up in Miami?
I grew up in the Ramos Mejía neighborhood of Buenos Aires, Argentina. I moved to Spain in 1997 after graduating from culinary school to work and learn from the rich Spanish food culture. After a year of living abroad, I decided Miami would be an amazing place to live. I came here in 1998 and immediately fell in love with the city!

2. What was your experience with food like growing up? What made you decide to be a chef?
I grew up in a big family and almost every night of the week, my dad was cooking a great asado, which is an Argentine barbecue, or we were visiting friends and family for a party or dinner. Even though I moved out of the city and studied to be a lifeguard on the coast of Argentina, I found myself attracted to the amazing food culture we have in the country and I decided to go to culinary school to sharpen my skills.

3. How did you end up working with SBE, specifically Katsuya?
I was working with Starr Restaurants and Chef Makoto Okuwa in Bal Harbour for about five years when I decided to take a leave of absence to be with my family in Buenos Aires. When I returned to the States, SBE and Katsuya reached out to me to lead their kitchen operations. I was more than happy to become part of such a great team.

4. How does the menu at the South Beach location differ from other Katsuya locations?
The Katsuyas all differ to an extent. We like to incorporate the flavors of Latin America and Miami into the menu, which gives us a unique edge. One of my favorite dishes is our Katsuya Ceviche, which is popular throughout Latin America. Our version is an Asian fusion with a fresh yuzu citrus ponzu and a dash of truffle oil.

5. Does Miami itself play a part when creating menu items, selecting ingredients, etc.?
It definitely does! We have beautiful weather year-round, which makes it ideal to promote locally grown and farm-to-table ingredients. We are very lucky to buy both locally sourced fish, produce, and meat, such as the natural Wagyu beef from Jackman Farms in Central Florida. We also to buy directly from Tsukiji Fish Market in Japan.

katsuya Chicken karaage

6. Tell us about some of the newer menu items. How do these items reflect Katsuya as an evolving culinary destination?
We strive to maintain a balance between classic and contemporary cuisine, and one example of that is our Salmon Tartare with paddlefish caviar. We use salmon rather than a traditional whitefish and drizzle it in ponzu with crispy salmon skin for texture and a dash of caviar on top. Another favorite of mine is our Chicken Karaage [pictured above], which is cooked low and slow with aromatics and served on top of a cold potato salad with Key limes. We like to keep our menu new and fresh, so that even if you have visited our location or any other Katsuya before, it will always be a unique experience.

7. What is a must-try for first-timers?
For first timers—even those who do not eat sushi—our menu is perfect because it is so diverse. While we pride ourselves on having high-quality and creative sushi, sashimi, and maki, Katsuya also has my favorite, the Robata Grill. Everything there is tapas-style, so it’s great for sharing and really embodies the izakaya dining experience of Japan. I recommend trying the Wagyu Filet and Foie Gras, or the grilled Maitake Mushrooms.

8. What can we expect in the future for Katsuya?
Our most important goal is to continue to offer consistent, yet creative dishes that will reflect the high standard that we hold for ourselves. We want to be ever-evolving as well, so we like to have weekly additions to the menu based on the seasons.

9. What local or celebrity chefs do you admire?
I admire Chef Susur Lee; not only is he a great friend, but he is talented and creative. I’d love for him to visit Miami more often so we could collaborate.

10. Do you have a favorite food or food guilty pleasure?
I really stick to my roots and try make everyone in my house happy. On the weekends, I’m always cooking up an asado dinner just as if we were back in Argentina. I bring back all my favorite spices and rubs from Argentina for the meat, and I make a lot of the same recipes my dad taught me when I was a kid. It’s a win-win situation!

Katsuya Sushi Bar Chefs

Art Basel Miami Beach (aka Miami Art Week) is upon us and we couldn’t be more thrilled! The glitz and glamour that descends upon our great city for one week only in December is a can’t-miss opportunity to mingle with artists, art connoisseurs, and celebrities alike. And, lucky for the food lovers out there, this also means ample opportunities to dine at some of the city’s hottest restaurants.

In honor of Art Basel, from December 3-6, Katsuya South Beach {1701 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.455.2995} at the SLS Hotel (which is typically only open for dinner) is rolling out a special limited-edition lunch menu. Available from 11:30am-3pm, the special menu will feature a number of Katsuya favorites, including the Yellowtail Sashimi with Jalapeño, thinly sliced with ponzu and jalapeño; Whitefish Sashimi with Crispy Onion, thinly sliced and seared with momiji ponzu and light crispy onion; and a selection of signature robata bar items and sushi rolls. The restaurant will resume its normal dinner service and menu starting at 5pm.

In exactly one week, who among us will be frantically slicing, dicing, basting, and frosting? Who will be making last-minute trips to the to the grocery store (for the third time!)? Who will be so caught up in preparing a feast of such epic proportions that there isn’t time to take a moment to reflect on the true meaning of Thanksgiving: giving thanks?

While home-cooked meals can certainly be fabulous, perhaps this is the year, you let someone else do the work—so you can focus on the stuff that really matters, like spending time with the people that you love. The following Miami restaurants are inviting you in to enjoy their own Thanksgiving feasts. We promise, if you go the dining out route, you (and your family) won’t be sorry.

Brickell/Downtown

Mandarin Oriental, Miami {500 Brickell Key Drive, Brickell; 305.913.8288} invites guests to spend Thanksgiving at either one of its signature restaurants. And for dessert, don’t miss out on the to-die-for Peruvian Chocolate Cheesecake with caramelized pecans served with baked apple ice cream.

Chef Danny Elmaleh

It’s finally here! SBE’s highly anticipated new hot spot Hyde Beach Kitchen + Cocktails {111 South Surf Road, Hallandale Beach; 954.699.0901} has officially opened its doors. Set on the sand in this up-and-coming neighborhood just north of Miami, Hyde Beach Kitchen + Cocktails encompasses 10,000 square feet over three levels, including three full-service bars, private dining spaces and meeting rooms, a boutique retail store, a members-only rooftop area, and more. Its three distinct dining areas will be overseen by Chef Danny Elmaleh, the culinary mastermind behind many of SBE’s renowned restaurants, including the award-winning Cleo. Here, we talk with the experienced chef about his latest culinary venture.

1. Tell us a bit about your background. What made you decide you wanted to be a chef?
I’m originally from Israel. I moved to Japan when I was 9 and lived there for more than 20 years. Both my father and the original Iron Chef in Japan inspired my decision to go to the Culinary Institute of America (CIA) in New York.

2. How did you end up working with SBE? What drew you to the brand?
I joined SBE to help with the Katsuya brand seven years ago, and my role within the company has grown over the years. At the time, the innovative brand was reinventing the hospitality scene and that really drew me toward working with them.

3. What about Hyde Beach Kitchen + Cocktails made you want to be involved?
The fact that it is a ground-up property right on the beach; it’s a rare opportunity to work on a project in such a great location.

4. Tell us about the overall menu concept.
The concept is new American, featuring great seafood classics that one can expect at such a location as well as exciting small plates and twists on traditional dishes that will leave guests yearning for more.

5. How do the menus differ from floor to floor?
The first floor serves a great breakfast from our Skinny Phat menu from 7-11am, offering healthy options as well as decadent over-the-top menu items. From 11am-6pm, we have our beach shack offering for guests who are looking to have a meal on the beach or at the bar. These are great options for families and groups.

The second floor is definitely the culinary highlight of the property, offering the full experience. Here, we offer great raw bar and crudo options as well as fresh pastas and pizzas and an incredible view. All of our seafood and meats are grilled over charcoal in our Josper ovens. There are also lots of exciting small plates options.

The third floor is our exclusive members floor with a small menu to enjoy by the pool and bar.

6. What are your personal favorite items on the menu?
The Pumpkin Butter Rolls! They are brioche rolls baked with butter, brushed with butter, and served with a side of butter. Nothing goes better with seafood than butter, so these are a great pairing for our seafood platter, and the perfect way to start the meal. The twist offered by the pumpkin and spice makes them one-of-a-kind.

7. What do you hope will surprise visitors when they dine here?
I hope people can experience new flavors they haven’t ever had before.

8. Do you have a favorite cooking show on TV?
I love watching Japanese cooking programs.

9. What local chefs or celebrity chefs do you admire?
Michael Pirolo of Macchialina; he always has great food.

10. Do you have a favorite food or food guilty pleasure?
In-N-Out Burger!

One of the things we love most about Miami Spice is that it doesn’t just last for one month, it lasts for two whole months. This means that there’s still plenty of time to visit all your favorite restaurants—and some brand-new ones—and enjoy unmatched three-course Miami Spice menus at discounted prices (dinner: $39; lunch: $23).

As we try to hit up as many Spice menus as we can, here are five more of our favorites we don’t want you to miss:

1. BLT Steak & The Betsy {1440 Ocean Drive, Miami Beach; 305.673.0044}
Spice menu available for lunch Monday-Friday and dinner Sunday-Friday.

Veal & Pork Meatballs from BLT Steak

Veal & Pork Meatballs from BLT Steak

We love that Celebrity Chef Laurent Tourondel likes to keep things interesting—his blackboard menu changes daily—and that means he’s entirely revamped his Spice menu for the month of September. For appetizers, our hands-down first choice is the Veal and Pork Meatballs. Chef Tourondel served these babies up for us during a special preview dinner last March, and we’ve been dreaming about them ever since! For entrées, it’s a toss-up between the 12oz CAB Coulotte and the Grilled Black Tiger Prawns. To round out the meal, you’ll also be able to choose your own side and melt-in-your-mouth dessert. But that’s not all! Even though it’s Miami Spice, you’ll still receive the complimentary goodies that are brought to every table at dinner: Chicken Liver Mousse with artisan bread and pickled vegetables, and the famous giant Popovers dusted with Gruyère cheese.

2. Bulla Gastrobar {2500 Ponce de Leon Boulevard, Coral Gables; 305.441.0107}
Spice menu available for lunch and dinner daily.

Branzino a la Vasca from Bulla Gastrobar

Branzino a la Vasca from Bulla Gastrobar

There’s nothing more disappointing than arriving at your planned restaurant of the evening, sitting down at your table, and then having your server tell you: “We’re not offering our Miami Spice menu right now.” With many establishments placing restrictions on when their specials are actually available, it’s comforting to know that at Bulla, it’s always time for Spice. Just last week, the Spanish restaurant rolled out updated Spice menus, featuring items such as the Albóndigas de Cordero (lamb meatballs), Branzino a la Vasca, and the Torrija dessert. As an added bonus, for both lunch and dinner, you can enjoy TWO glasses of any of Bulla’s popular sangrías for just $10.

3. Atrio Restaurant & Wine Room {1395 Brickell Avenue, Brickell; 305.503.6529}
Spice menu available for lunch and dinner daily.

Pan-Roasted Monkfish from Atrio Restaurant & Wine Room

Pan-Roasted Monkfish from Atrio Restaurant & Wine Room

For Miami Spice, the Conrad Miami’s signature restaurant is serving up some of its classic dishes and seasonal favorites. For appetizers, we recommend the crisp Waldorf Salad, followed by the Pan-Roasted Monkfish, which is served with confit garlic, Mediterranean baby vegetables, and red wine reduction. And for dessert, don’t miss out on the gooey Chocolate Coulant Cake served with salted caramel ice cream. Plus, if you’re looking for a quick power lunch, Atrio’s got you covered. Simply ask for the special “Taste of Time” menu, which guarantees (if you so choose) that you’ll be in and out in 45 minutes or less. An hourglass will be placed on your table at the start of the meal; and if your meal isn’t completed in time, your lunch is on the house.

4. Scarpetta {4441 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 877.326.7412}
Spice menu available for dinner Sunday-Thursday.

Creamy Polenta from Scarpetta

Creamy Polenta from Scarpetta

Celebrity Chef Scott Conant’s menu at Scarpetta at the Fontainebleau is drool-worthy any time of year. But during Miami Spice, it becomes even more enticing. The restaurant recently revamped its Spice menu, giving you even more options to savor. For appetizers, we recommend the Creamy Polenta, which is served alongside a medley of truffled mushrooms (which happen to be a specialty of the restaurant this time of year). Continue the experience with the Short Rib Agnolotti Dal Pin before ending with the traditional dolce: Almond Panna Cotta. If you’re not in the mood for Italian, Fontainebleau’s three other flagship restaurants—Hakkasan, Michael Mina 74, and StripSteak—have also updated their Spice menus for the month of September.

5. The Bazaar by José Andrés {1701 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.455.2999}
Spice menu available for dinner Sunday-Thursday.

Bao con Lechón from The Bazaar by José Andrés

Bao con Lechón from The Bazaar by José Andrés

Decisions, decisions! Hands down, one of the most extensive option-filled Spice menus out there is from the SLS South Beach’s Bazaar by José Andrés. First, you’ll choose your appetizer, or “snack,” from five different options (we recommend the Bao con Lechón—pork belly on a Chinese bun). Next, you’ll select THREE options from an expansive menu that includes several “Verduras,” seven types of “Carnes y Mariscos,” and three “Fruits and Vegetables” dishes. And don’t forget: You’ll also get to choose a dessert, so be sure to save room!

zuma

Zuma

California Roll? Yum. Spicy Tuny Roll? Yes, please. Sex on the Beach Roll? You’ll have to keep reading. Here’s our list of the top 10 sushi restaurants in Miami, in no particular order.

1. Zuma {270 Biscayne Boulevard Way; Downtown; 305 577 0277}
Located at the Epic Hotel facing the Miami River in Downtown Miami, the world-class Zuma is often cited as one of the city’s best. The expansive menu features a seemingly endless array of signature dishes and sushi rolls featuring surprising combinations and flavors—a true treat for the senses. Be sure to make your reservations well in advance; last-minute tables here are hard to come by.

2. Nobu {1901 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.695.3232}
Just two blocks down from SLS inside the classic Miami Beach Shore Club is another world-renowned sushi restaurant: Nobu. Executive Chef Thomas Buckley honed his skills at Nobu London and now brings Chef Nobu Matsuhisa’s award-winning culinary interpretations to South Beach. Most dishes are served family-style, perfect for a groups and large parties, lending an even more lively atmosphere to the already festive space.

3. Kazumi {260 Crandon Boulevard #16, Key Biscayne; 305.361.2675}
Key Biscayne locals will swear by this modern Japanese concept from the owners of Costa Med. Expect to find all your Japanese staples, including sushi rolls and sashimi, and yakitori bites from the robata grill. You’ll also find some unexpected twists like the Sex on the Beach and Honeymoon rolls. Stop by for lunch for one of the many reasonably priced bento boxes, which allow you to combine a bunch of your favorites into one flavorful meal.

Katsuya

Catsup by Starck

4. Katsuya by Starck {1701 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.455.2995}
Miamians rejoiced a few years back when the trendy SLS brand made its hotel debut in South Beach. And we were even more excited when we found out that inside this chic hotel would be the acclaimed sushi restaurant, Katsuya. The brand is known throughout the world for its modern Japanese cuisine by Master Chef Katsuya Uechi and its cool design motif by design impresario Philippe Starck—and the Miami location is no exception. More good news: a Katsuya is scheduled to open a downtown location later this year.

3. Pubbelly Sushi {1424 20th Street, Miami Beach; 305.531.9282}
From the Pubbelly Boys, the same team behind Pubbelly Gastropub, Pubbelly Sushi is a hip Sunset Harbour neighborhood sushi den that packs the house nightly with its Asian-inspired pub grub from Partners Jose Mendin and Chef Yuki Ieto. Big anime murals accent the space’s exposed brick, large chalkboards, and floor-to-ceiling windows, while stainless-steel light fixtures and dark wooden tables complete the look.

Hannya

Hannya

6. Hannya {1063 Brickell Plaza, Brickell; 305.808.5833}
It seems that a new restaurant pops up in Brickell daily, making it hard to stand out from the pack. But Hannya manages to do just that. The new eatery is a concept by Larry Chi of Sunset Place’s Akashi, which was one of the first sushi bars in the area when it opened in 1993 and remains a local favorite to this day. A must-try: the Alex #2 Roll. It’s hard to resist this tasty blend of shrimp tempura, krab salad, masago, and cream cheese topped with avocado, spicy mayo, and eel sauce—especially since the word “AMAZING!” is included in its menu description.

8. SOHO Bay {520 West Avenue, Miami Beach; 786.618.2788}
It’s very rare that a brand-new restaurant makes a top 10 list right away. Although SOHO BAY is new to Miami (it officially opened its doors on April 7), it is no stranger to the restaurant biz. In fact, this modern eatery is already an established success in Brazil, with 15 years of experience and eight locations across the country. Executive Chef Ricardo Sauri, formerly of Nobu fame, has devised a tempting sushi and sashimi-focused menu, which is complemented by a sizable list of fine sakes and innovative cocktails.

7. 26 Sushi & Tapas {9487 Harding Avenue, Surfside; 305.570.2626}
Kosher sushi? The two words at first glance do not seem to go together. But that’s exactly what makes 26 different. The restaurant, which encompasses a main dining room, sushi bar, cocktail bar, and patio dining, is certified by Kosher Miami. Chef Fernando Chang brings over a decade of experience conceiving dazzling kosher sushi and Japanese cuisine—with a hint of Peruvian flair—making it safe to say that kosher never tasted so good.

9. Fung Kü {1720 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 305.534.7905}
Have you ever heard of naked sushi? We hadn’t. Until we visited at the Catalina Hotel in South Beach. Serving up fine Thai and Japanese cuisine, dinner is always a treat here. And once you’re done eating, stay right where you are. A delicious party ensues complete with a live DJ spinning tunes and fabulous drink specials. As for the naked sushi? Let’s just say you’ll have to come in to experience it for yourself.

10. Naoe {661 Brickell Key Drive; Brickell Key; 305.379.0903}
Nestled on the quieter, more subdued Brickell Key, just off of Brickell Avenue, NAOE is quickly becoming the must-visit sushi restaurant for those in-the-know. At the helm is Chef Kevin Cory, whose family has been making shoyu (translation: soy sauce) since 1825 in the small town of Oono, Japan. Monday through Saturday, he serves up his signature Chef’s Choice prix-fixe menu. It changes daily, which means that every time you visit this Forbes five-star eatery (one of only 38 in the United States), you’re in for a new surprise.
