Enjoy art, food and fun at this Wynwood Institution

When you think of Wynwood, what comes to mind? Art is usually the first thing that pops up for us: Street murals are everywhere, along with galleries galore. The other thing that comes to mind is food. Over the years, the area has gone from a warehouse district to a dining mecca. But before there was an eatery on every street, there was R House.

Back in 2014, the restaurant opened when Wynwood was still growing into the beast it has become today. And years later, R House continues to draw crowds for its gorgeous art, globally inspired food and fun vibes. Leading the kitchen is chef/owner Rocco Carulli, who’s the R behind R House. He and his husband Owen Bale have created a concept that fits right into the artsy neighborhood. You’ll be drawn in by the many murals and stay for the food and good times.

Tuna Tartare

The diverse menu pulls from Carulli’s Italian American heritage; sauces and other flavorful components brighten up familiar dishes like tuna tartare, arancini, and brisket and short rib meatballs. Many of the appetizers skew large – all the more reason to come in a group – so don’t eat with your eyes here (it’s easy to do). One or two appetizers should be enough for parties four or smaller, and you’ll want to save room for Carulli’s even heartier mains.

One big standout is the sweet chili fried chicken, which perfectly walks the line between sweet and spicy; it’s a delicate balance that your taste buds will thoroughly enjoy. There’s just something so satisfying about the kick you get from biting into the extra crispy skin and juicy chicken; we were sad that our entree eventually had to end.

Braised Short Rib

On the other side of the protein spectrum was the braised short rib, which will take you aback with its size. It’s a dish that you’ll likely end up taking home – we did – and enjoy as leftovers for lunch or dinner the next day. You can almost consider it two meals in one; it’s a great value.

Rounding out the offerings is a small selection of sweets, including Rocco’s popular zeppole. These Italian dough balls with raspberries and chocolate chips are surprisingly light and not overpoweringly sweet. If you don’t want to hate yourself, consider these over the more decadent tres leches or homemade chocolate brownie.

In the end, what we enjoy the most about R House is the fact that it packs many experiences in one place. While we went for a romantic dinner, it’s also a great place for grabbing drinks or watching a show – a drag show, to be exact.

A “beat the clock” happy hour during the week provides guests with drinks and bites for as low as $3 an item; it’s one of the best deals in the area. And on weekends, R House turns into a party. Saturdays and Sundays are home to the restaurant’s famous drag brunch, where lively performers keep patrons entertained amidst bottomless drinks. If you’re considering coming for brunch, we suggest you make a reservation well in advance – it fills up fast.

So whatever the occasion, keep R House at the top of your list. Once you visit, you’ll understand why this Wynwood institution has withstood the test of time – and will continue to.

Tres Leches Cake from R House
Serves 12

Ingredients

Cake
– 5 eggs
– 1 c sugar
– 2 c all-purpose flour
– 1/2 tsp salt
– 1 Tbsp baking powder
– 5 Tbsp water
– 5 Tbsp oil
– 1 Tbsp vanilla extract

Milk Mixture
– 1 can sweeten condensed milk (14 oz)
– 32 oz heavy cream
– 2 cans evaporated milk (12 oz)

Method
In a bowl, whip eggs with sugar until soft, pale, and foamy. In another bowl, mix flour with baking powder and salt. In a third bowl, combine water, oil, and vanilla extract. In a large mixing bowl, combine all three bowls and mix well to form a batter. Pour batter into cake pans sprayed with Baker’s Joy. Bake at 325 degrees for 20 minutes. When done, and while still warm, cut off the tops of the cakes. To make the milk mixture, combine condensed milk, heavy cream, and evaporated milk. Place cakes loose in open tray, and pour milk mixture over them, adding more as the milk becomes absorbed. Spoon milk mixture over top of cakes to aid absorption. Serve with caramel praline sauce and garnish with whipped cream and a mint leaf.

Here is all of the food news you can get excited about in Miami this week:

Last Week of Miami Spice!
You only have until the end of September to take advantage of Miami’s most raved-about foodie season, Miami Spice. From now through September 30, checkout your favorite restaurants—like StripSteak by Michael Mina, db Bistro Moderne, Tamarina and 200+ more—for lunch or dinner, and get three-course prix-fixe meals for $23 and $39, respectively. For a real treat, head to one of our favorites, GK Bistronomie {218 NW 25th Street, Wynwood; 786.477.5151} and find modern Peruvian plates, like lobster empanadas and crispy pork belly with sundried potato “stew,” on the Spice menu.

Barley an American Brasserie Opens Its Doors
A new restaurant, Barley an American Brasserie {8945 SW 72 Place, Miami; 786.623.6733}, the latest culinary venture by Chef Jorgie Ramos, opened its doors this week. Located in Downtown Dadeland, this haute gastropub will serve rustic Americana comfort food with Latin and Asian influences: from charred octopus with seaweed, miso aioli, and a farro salad, to braised beef tongue with yucca mofongo and sofrito salad, lamb neck filet doused in a horseradish tzatziki, and the Latin burger topped with chorizo cantimpalo, sweet plantains, manchego, and a chimichurri aioli. Go there for its daily mac ‘n’ cheese rotation and specialty craft beer, cocktail and boutique wine menu, and stay for the relaxed vibes and hearty, creative cuisine.

National Pizza Month Starts Saturday, October 1st
This Saturday is the start of an entire month dedicated to pizza – and that’s something we believe everyone should celebrate. Don’t know where to go? Try Dolce Italian {1690 Collins Avenue, Miami Beach; 786.975.2550}, on Miami Beach. It has a Tartufata Pizza that puts a unique twist on the classic cheese variety with savory blanca cheese, speck, spicy salami and truffle. Another delicious option is La Moderna {1874 Bay Road, Miami Beach; 786.717.7274}, where you can enjoy their traditional, but unparalleled, Margherita Pizza in a casual-chic setting.

Ocio Launches New Happy Hour
Miami’s favorite new escape, Ocio {3399 NW 72nd Avenue, Doral; 786.360.4468} is unveiling a happy hour at its secluded and chic retreat. Tucked away in Doral, this Italian-driven locale invites guests to come on Thursday and Friday nights, from 5 to 7:30 p.m., and get a complimentary appetizer with the purchase of a glass of wine or beer. With your glass, delight in plates like fried mozzarella with homemade marinara sauce, Antipasto (salami, capicola, prosciutto, parmesan cheese, artichoke hearts and roasted red peppers), or the Octopus Carpaccio, thinly-sliced octopus with capers and steeped in an aromatic lemon vinaigrette.

Sunday Brunch at Wynwood Kitchen & Bar
Between 11:30 a.m. and 4:30 p.m. on Sundays, there’s nowhere better to be than brunch at Wynwood Kitchen & Bar {2550 NW 2nd Avenue, Wynwood; 305.722.8959}. Order Latin-inspired dishes like the Wynwood Benedict with poached egg, crabmeat, chipotle hollandaise sauce and polenta, or the Tostada with a sunny side-up egg, tomato puree, black beans, cojita cheese and crema. You can never go wrong with the locale’s Steak & Eggs, a grilled skirt steak served with a fried egg and yucca frita, and whatever you do, pair it with a breakfast cocktail. Our personal favorites are the Prosecco cocktails—you get a nice glass of Prosecco flavored with your choice of Hibiscus, Palomimosa, Applish or Blue Pisco.

Seed Food & Wine

The five-day SEED Food & Wine Festival, the nation’s only plant-based food and wine experience, officially kicked off Wednesday evening with a special “Movies and Munchies” event at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens, which featured a screening of Frank Ferrante’s “May I Be Frank.”

The festival continued last night at the Eden Roc Miami Beach with the first-annual Veggie Burger Battle. The heated battle featured various veggie burgers from chefs across the country, all vying to win the coveted title of “Best Veggie Burger in America.” Though it was a tough decision, the prize ultimately was awarded to Chef Todd Erick Erickson of Haven South Beach, while Green Bar Kitchen won for Fan-Favorite.

Now, we’re gearing up for a full day of SEED fun tomorrow, which begins at 8am for the SEED 5K run through Wynwood, followed by a yoga class and guided meditation with instructors from local studios. And after that, it’s time to head over to the SEED Tasting Village, a large-scale outdoor event at MANA Wynwood from 11am-6pm featuring sustainable food, wine, juices, organic body care, clothing, and more—all things dedicated to plant-based living.

The festival rounds out on Sunday with a morning yoga and brunch at the Thompson Miami Beach, followed by Sprouts Kids Day at the Miami Beach Botanical Gardens, a fun-filled afternoon for the entire family, with programming dedicated to children ages 3-10.

We hope to see you there!

midtown oyster bar

On Wednesday, September 30, Midtown Oyster Bar {3301 Northeast First Avenue, Suite 103-1, Midtown; 786.220.2070} is partnering up with Wynwood Brewing Company for a special one-night-only grand tasting event.

Together, MOB’s Chef Ralph Cohen and Wynwood Brewing’s “Missionary of Beer” David Rodriguez have created a mouthwatering nine-course tasting menu highlighting the best flavors of both New England and Miami, each paired with an equally tempting on-tap craft beer.

Guests can expect classic MOB dishes such as oysters (naturally) and the Smoked Scottish Salmon on toasted brioche with dill cream cheese, plus a handful of modified versions of current dishes—the Meatball and Goat Cheese Sliders and the Grilled Gulf Oyster Kilpatrick, for example—to enhance and complement the beer flavors.

In addition to classic Wynwood Brewing beers such as La Rubia Blonde and Magic City Pale Ale, guests will be able to sample seasonal specials such as Rickenbacker Pilsner (paired with Shrimp Spring Rolls with mango chutney) and Father Francisco Belgian Golden Strong (paired with Chicken Teriyaki Skewers) along with some specialties such as Stiglitz and Scotchy Doesn’t Know Scotch Ale.

The event will take place at Midtown Oyster Bar from 7-9pm. Cost is $75 per person, all-inclusive. To purchase tickets, click here.

Wynwood Kitchen_Wynwood Benedict

Wynwood Kitchen & Bar {2550 Northwest Second Avenue, Wynwood; 305.722.8959}, known for its hip, artsy vibe and flavorful, tapas-style menu, is finally giving locals what they’ve been asking for ever since the eatery opened almost five years ago: Sunday brunch.

The classic eatery has always been closed on Sunday … but not anymore. Starting this weekend, Wynwood Kitchen will be open on Sunday from 11:30am-4:30pm, serving a rotating menu of classic brunch dishes in addition to its regular menu. The new items were crafted by Venezuela-born Executive Chef Miguel Aguilar and inspired by traditional Latin breakfast staples.

Some highlights of the Wynwood brunch include the Wynwood Benedict (pictured above), featuring poached egg with crabmeat, chipotle hollandaise, and polenta; Perico, scrambled eggs served with queso fresco, black beans, and arepas; Cachapas, sweet yellow corn cakes smothered in queso mano, queso fresco, and crema; and Tostada (pictured below), a sunnyside-up egg with tomato purée, black beans, Cojita cheese, and crema.

And it’s not just the food menu that’s getting a Sunday brunch makeover. The restaurant has also introduced a number of delicious brunch-friendly libations, including Prosecco cocktails mixed with your choice of Hibiscus, Palomimosa, Applish, or Blue Pisco; Bloody Marys (such as the Tomatilla Sangríta with Jose Cuervo Special and a tomatillo blend); and red, white, and green sangrías served by the glass or pitcher.
